Alliance: A true juggernaut amongst BJJ teams, Alliance has been one of the (if not the) biggest team in the jiu jitsu panorama in recent history always pacing fighters in the top positions.



American Top Team (ATT): With solid foundations in former Carlson Gracie and Brazilian Top Team members, ATT has generated a lot of buzz around it in both MMA and BJJ.



Atos: Famed for their guard magicians, Atos showed up in the late 2000’s but has already made a big name for themselves with several fighters winning important tournaments such as the World Cup Pro and the Mundials.

Barbosa Jiu Jitsu A team with a solid foundation in the city of Sao Paulo, Brazil, Barbosa Jiu Jitsu is today one of the strongest teams at a Brazilian national level.

Brasa: Formed in its majority by former Alliance team members, Brasa appeared in the main stream of Jiu Jitsu in the mid 2000’s and is still one of the main BJJ teams in the world.



Brasil 021: One of the youngest teams on the list, Brasil 021’s shining star is Hannette Staack (multiple world and ADCC champion) but it has many more important figures on it’s roster.



Brazilian Top Team (BTT): Raised in the early 2000’s, the Brazilian Top Team has since had its bumps and bruises, but it is still a significant team amongst Jiu Jitsu’s and MMA’s landscape.



Carlson Gracie Team: One of the most historical teams to have ever entered a BJJ tournament, the CG team was once led by master Carlson Gracie and has since his departure been trying to get back in the mix amongst BJJ’s top teams.



Checkmat: One of the strongest teams in the world, Checkmat is one of the few teams that can rival Alliance’s prowess in the black belt division with new talent being pumped regularly into the Jiu Jitsu stream.



Cia Paulista (Companhia Paulista): As the name might hint, this team has strong roots in Sao Paulo, Brazil, but it has recently established bases in the USA and Australia and it is again becoming an important team in Jiu Jitsu tournaments all over the world.



GF Team (Grappling Fight Team):Formerly known as Gama Filho, the GFT is an historical academy from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil which has had tremendous success in recent years, having brought loads of talent to the world’s main competitions.



Gordo Evolve: With strong roots in the Gracie Barra family, the Gordo Jiu Jitsu team has been a beacon for foreigners looking for a place to train in Rio de Janeiro.



Gracie Barra: Few teams have a bigger curriculum then the Gracie Barra academy, the world’s most important team in the 2000’s, the Gracie Barra has recently moved HQ to California and is still one of the most important jiu jitsu schools in the world.



Gracie Fighter: A new team that has already proved to deserve a place amongst the best of the best. Time will tell what more talent may come from their mats.



Gracie Humaita: One of the premiere teams in the world, Gracie Humaita has had coaches such as Helio, Rickson, Royler and Rolker Gracie… with coaches like this, I don’t think I need to big it up…



Lloyd Irvin: The first American team to square up against the big Brazilian teams, Lloyd Irvin has been doing a tremendous job with the younger belt divisions and even the adult black belts.



Nova Geração: Another big team based out in the south area of Rio de Janeiro, Nova Geracao has today spread all over the world and has been very successful in competition.



Nova Uniao: Another historical team that had in the 1990s the best lightweight team the world had ever seen. Today they are still making their mark in the Jiu Jitsu and MMA world.



Paragon: A team with strong links to Alliance, the Paragon team has operated in the US since the late 1990’s and is still running strong in the national circuit (America) with a few classy competitors doing good internationally as well.



Renzo Gracie: A very strong team world wide, Renzo operates from New York, and has had tremendous success with his fighters both in MMA and BJJ.



Ryan Gracie: A strong team with a base in Sao Paulo, the Ryan Gracie team has been collecting trophies all around the world and is considered one of the top jiu jitsu teams today.

Gracie Humaitá

Gracie Humaitá       (pronounced ooh-my-tá)

or Academia Gracie de Jiu-Jitsu is a Jiu-Jitsu academy on Humaitá Street, in Botafogo, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, founded by Grandmaster Helio Gracie. The Academy offers classes in Gracie Jiu-Jitsu, as originally taught by Grandmaster Helio Gracie.

The academy is located inside the Colégio Padre Antonio Vieira, a private Catholic school. What began in this academy later on became the worldwide sport of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. It was founded by Helio Gracie after the original Gracie Academy closed its doors in downtown Rio in the 1960s. Today the school focuses primarily in Sport Jiu-Jitsu.

The gym is currently run by Hélio’s sons, Royler and Rolker Gracie. Almost all of the fighters in the famous Gracie family, including Rickson, have trained at the school extensively.

On November 17,2009 the Gracie Competition Team Academy opened for business in San Diego California. The academy is affiliated with Royler Gracie and Gracie Humaita and is run by Professors Regis Lebre and Johnny Faria and of course Royler Gracie is there frequently to conduct classes.
